The Problem
The Urgent Crisis
Madagascar is home to over 100 species of lemurs — and nearly 80% are at risk of extinction within decades.
In recent years, the illegal lemur pet trade has surged, both locally and internationally. Without urgent intervention, we risk losing these irreplaceable primates forever
- Habitat destruction & forest fragmentation
- Poaching & wildlife trafficking
- Lack of standards for captive care
- No national system for rehabilitation or release
- Extreme poverty and weak enforcement
- International demand ( 48 lemurs seized in Thailand, 2024)
OUR APPROACH
Rescue. Rehabilitate. Rewild.
We take action at every step of a lemur’s journey — from urgent rescue and expert medical care to ethical reintroduction or permanent sanctuary. Our solutions are science-based, community-driven, and built for lasting impact.

Community & Conservation
People for Lemurs
The Lemur Freedom Project is rooted in the belief that true conservation is only possible when local people are at the heart of the mission. We work hand in hand with communities across Madagascar to ensure that protecting lemurs also means supporting livelihoods, sharing knowledge, and creating opportunity.
